How to Get Your G2 Licence: Road Test Tips & Restrictions (2024)

Passing your G2 road test is one of the most exciting moments in a new driver's life โ€” it means you can drive independently, without a supervising driver beside you. This guide covers everything you need to know: when you're eligible, how to book the test, exactly what happens during the G2 road test, and what restrictions still apply once you pass.

Ontario-specific guide

The G2 licence is part of Ontario's Graduated Licensing System. Other Canadian provinces use different systems. Always confirm details with your provincial authority.

What Is the G2 Licence?

The G2 is the second stage of Ontario's Graduated Licensing System (GLS). It is a full road licence with some remaining restrictions, particularly for younger drivers. Unlike the G1, a G2 holder can drive without a supervising driver, can drive on 400-series highways, and can drive at any hour of the day or night.

Most new drivers spend at least 12 months with a G2 before being eligible for the full G licence test โ€” which removes all restrictions.

When Are You Eligible to Take the G2 Road Test?

PathMinimum G1 Hold Time
Standard (no driving course)12 months with G1
With an approved driver education course8 months with G1

Taking an approved driving school course can cut your wait time by 4 months โ€” and the practical skills you gain make passing the test easier too.

How to Book Your G2 Road Test

  1. Visit the DriveTest website (drivetest.ca) or call 1-888-570-6110
  2. Create an account or log in to your existing one
  3. Select a DriveTest centre near you and choose a date/time
  4. Pay the road test fee at the time of booking
  5. Arrive at least 30 minutes early on test day with your G1 licence card
Booking tip

DriveTest centres can be booked weeks or months in advance, especially in the GTA. Book your test as soon as you become eligible โ€” don't wait until the last minute. You can always cancel or reschedule with enough notice.

What to Bring on G2 Test Day

  • Your valid G1 licence card
  • A roadworthy vehicle (you must provide the car โ€” it must have valid insurance and plates)
  • Your glasses or contacts if required for driving
  • Arrive well-rested โ€” nerves are normal, but fatigue makes them worse

What Happens During the G2 Road Test?

The G2 road test takes approximately 20โ€“30 minutes and is conducted by a DriveTest examiner who rides in the passenger seat. The test is done on regular city streets โ€” not on 400-series highways (that comes at the G test).

Skills Evaluated

  • Starting and stopping smoothly โ€” no abrupt braking or lurching starts
  • Turns โ€” left and right turns, proper lane position, signalling
  • Lane changes โ€” mirrors, shoulder check, signalling, smooth execution
  • Intersections โ€” stopping at the correct position, yielding properly, navigating four-way stops
  • Parallel parking โ€” you will almost certainly be asked to parallel park
  • 3-point turn (K-turn) โ€” sometimes included
  • Stopping for school buses โ€” knowing when and where to stop for flashing lights
  • Observational habits โ€” mirror checks, scanning ahead, checking blind spots
  • Speed control โ€” maintaining appropriate speed, not going too fast or too slow

Top Tips to Pass Your G2 Test

1. Nail the Shoulder Check

One of the most common reasons people fail the G2 test is not doing enough visible shoulder checks (head turns). Examiners need to see you checking โ€” a quick glance isn't enough. Turn your head clearly before every lane change and when pulling away from the curb.

2. Signal Early and Often

Signal before every turn and lane change, not as you're doing it. Signal before you check your mirrors and blind spot, then execute the maneuver.

3. Come to a Complete Stop

Rolling stops โ€” where you slow down but don't fully stop โ€” are automatic failures at stop signs. Stop fully until the vehicle is completely still, count a beat, then proceed.

4. Watch Your Speed

Driving 5โ€“10 km/h below the speed limit might feel "safe" but examiners flag it as impeding traffic. Aim to drive at or close to the posted limit (while adjusting for conditions).

5. Practice Parallel Parking Until It's Automatic

Parallel parking causes more test failures than almost anything else. Practice on a quiet street with real parked cars, not just cones. Know your reference points in your practice vehicle.

6. Communicate Your Observation Habits

Check your mirrors every 5โ€“8 seconds during normal driving. The examiner is watching whether you're actively scanning โ€” make it obvious.

7. Don't Let Nerves Rush You

At four-way stops or when pulling out of a parking space, take the time you need. Rushing and making an error is worse than taking an extra second to confirm it's safe.

Common Automatic Failure Mistakes

  • Running a red light or stop sign
  • Dangerous action that requires the examiner to intervene
  • Driving the wrong way on a one-way street
  • Failing to stop for a school bus with flashing red lights
  • Speeding significantly over the limit
  • Rolling stop at a stop sign

G2 Licence Restrictions

Passing the G2 test removes most G1 restrictions โ€” but some remain, especially for drivers under 20.

Restrictions for All G2 Holders

RuleDetail
Blood alcohol / drugsZero tolerance โ€” 0% BAC required
Accompanying driverNot required โ€” you can drive alone
HighwaysPermitted โ€” you can now drive on 400-series highways
Night drivingPermitted โ€” no time restrictions

Additional Restrictions for G2 Holders Under 20

Ontario has special passenger restrictions for young G2 holders to reduce the risk of distracted and peer-influenced driving:

PeriodMidnightโ€“5 a.m. Passenger Limit
First 6 months of G2 (under 20)Maximum 1 passenger aged 19 or younger (immediate family exempt)
After 6 months of G2 (under 20)Maximum 3 passengers aged 19 or younger (immediate family exempt)
Exceptions to passenger restrictions

The passenger limits don't apply if a fully licensed driver (G, 4+ years experience) is sitting in the front passenger seat. Immediate family members are also always permitted regardless of the limits.

How Long Do You Hold a G2?

You must hold your G2 for a minimum of 12 months before you can take the G exit road test (the test for the full G licence). Your G2 is valid for 5 years total โ€” if you don't get your full G before it expires, you'll need to start over.

What Changes When You Get Your G2?

  • You can drive without a supervising driver
  • You can drive on highways and expressways
  • You can drive at any hour
  • Your car insurance may change โ€” notify your insurer as soon as you pass
